What ceramic coating actually does

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds to your factory paint and cures into a thin, hard, glass-like layer. It is not a wax that washes off in a month, it becomes part of the surface, and the effect on a well-prepared car is striking. What it gives you:

  • A deeper, wetter gloss with real clarity and reflection
  • A hydrophobic, self-cleaning surface, water beads and sheets off, carrying dirt with it
  • Genuine UV protection that helps guard against fading and oxidation
  • Easier, faster washing, with far less grime clinging to the paint

One honest point we make to every client: ceramic coating does not stop rock chips or scratches. It is far too thin to absorb physical impact, that is the job of paint protection film. Ceramic is about gloss, cleanliness and UV defence, not armour.

Ceramic and PPF, together

The two are not rivals, they are partners, and most of our clients pair them. Paint protection film goes on the impact zones, the front end or the full car, taking the chips and road rash. Ceramic coating then goes on top, over both the film and the bare paint, so the entire vehicle shares one slick, glossy, easy-clean finish.

The result is the best of both: physical protection where the road throws debris, and a hydrophobic shine everywhere else. Coating the film also makes it even easier to keep clean and helps it shrug off contamination. If you are weighing the two, our paint protection film page lays out coverage and pricing.

Pricing

Ceramic coating from $890; exact pricing depends on the vehicle and the prep it needs, confirmed free at consultation. A car with flawless paint needs less work than one calling for correction first, so we give you an honest figure once we have seen it, never a surprise at collection.

The process

Most of the work happens before the coating.

i.

Decontamination

A thorough wash, then clay and chemical decontamination to lift bonded grime, iron and fallout from the paint.

ii.

Paint preparation

Correction where needed to remove swirls and marring, so the gloss you lock in is the best the paint can give.

iii.

Coating application

The ceramic is hand-applied panel by panel and levelled under controlled lighting, with nothing rushed.

iv.

Cure

Left to cure under cover so it bonds and hardens properly before the car returns to the road.

You are welcome to inspect the finished car under bright inspection lighting before you settle.

Common questions

Ceramic coating, answered.

Does ceramic coating protect against rock chips? +

No. Ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that adds gloss, hydrophobicity and UV protection, but it will not stop stone chips or scratches. Physical impact protection comes from paint protection film, not ceramic. Many owners fit film first, then coat over the top.

How long does ceramic coating last? +

A professionally applied coating typically performs for two to five years, depending on the product and how the car is cared for. Regular washing and the occasional top-up keep the gloss and water-beading at their best for longer.

Ceramic coating vs PPF, which do I need? +

They do different jobs. Paint protection film physically absorbs rock chips, scratches and road rash; ceramic coating adds gloss, easy cleaning and UV defence but offers no impact protection. If you want your paint shielded from damage, choose film. If you want a deeper shine and a self-cleaning finish, choose ceramic. Many owners do both, film on the impact areas, ceramic over everything.

How much does ceramic coating cost in Vancouver? +

Ceramic coating at RainCity PPF starts from $890. The exact figure depends on the vehicle, its paint condition and how much correction is needed beforehand, and is confirmed free at consultation.
